Truth Exposed: Finished
In John 19:30 Jesus utters his final words: “it is finished.” Many, many believe that he was speaking of his death, that his mortal life had ended. The Greek for this phrase is tetelestai, which means “paid in full.” Jesus accomplished what he set out to do, he paid our debt, 1 John 2:2. The Greek word for debt is opheilema, which means a fault, offense, sin. When we pray, forgive us our debt, 1 John 1:9, Jesus answers, paid in full. In Matthew 6:12, we also pray, “as we forgive our debtors.” Can we also say, “paid in full?”
