Truth Exposed: Rock
The world, and the church, assume that Matthew 16:18 is setting up Peter upon whom the church will be built, but I contend that is wrong. The rock is not Peter, although that is what his name means, but Christ himself. Look at the following verses: Psalm 18:23; 62:2,6; 95:1; 2 Samuel 22:2; 1 Peter 2:4; 2 Samuel 23:2. And there are many more that refer to Jesus as the Rock, not Peter. Jesus is telling Peter that he will build the church on the rock of faith, that is Christ himself, the cornerstone. Ephesians 2:20; 1 Corinthians 3:11; Psalm 118:22-23. It is not a work of man, but of God.
