Truth Exposed: Happiness vs Contentment
To be happy is to be favored by luck or fortune; to be content is to be satisfied. Paul said in Phil 4:11-13 that he had learned to be content in all situations; he was satisfied with what the Lord had provided; he was at peace. Happiness is controlled by outward circumstances. 1 Timothy 6:6-8 and Hebrews 13:5 continue this theme. Psalm 16:11 tells us where our joy is, not our happiness. Can happiness and contentment be the same thing? Yes, as long as we are content with God’s provision first, then happiness will follow. It is said that we make our own happiness, but if we are not content with God’s provision, we will never be happy with our own little world.
