Truth Exposed:  

Leviticus 21 & 22 reveal some interesting requirements for the priests.  They cannot be ceremonially unclean in any way or, as the scripture says, they “bring shame on my (God) holy name.”  1 Peter 2:9 tells us that we are a royal priesthood.  We have all long been taught that sin hurts the heart of God, but I have never ever heard anyone say that wrongdoing brings shame to God’s name, but it certainly makes sense.  The uncleanliness in the O.T. was physical, in the N.T. it is spiritual.  It also says that no one can bring worship and offerings to the Lord if they are unclean or in an unworthy manner; if they do, they must be cut off from the Lord, they could not be in the presence of God.  The same with us.  Sin separates.  It cuts us off from fellowship with God, and also each other.
