Truth Exposed:   Provoked

In Acts 17:16 Paul uses the word “provoked” to describe how he was feeling about the pagan idols he was encountering.  The Greek word is parozyno and it means “to arouse to anger or to burn with anger.”  That is a very strong emotion.  What is an idol?  Anything that replaces God in our lives, namely, sin.  So the question that needs asked is this:  Am I provoked, aroused to anger, by the sin in my life?  I can’t do anything about the sin in the world, but I certainly can about the sin in my own life.  This goes hand in hand with Matt 5:3-4, both of which deal with our spiritual condition.  The poor in spirit know what they lack and those who mourn are mourning their sinful lives.  Thank you, Jesus, for opening your word.
